John Roeder

1877-1964

John Roeder was born in Luxembourg in 1877 and raised on a farm.  Later, he worked in steel mills and iron mines.  He immigrated to Richmond, CA in 1909 with his wife and children.  When he was not working as a Standard Oil pipe fitter or as a gardener for a high school, he sculpted and painted in his free time.  After 20 years as a gardener, and well into his fifties, he had 2 exhibitions at the Richard Art Center in 1960 and 1962.  Very little else is known about Roeder and I would welcome further biographical info.
