Elmo Howard

b. 1928

Elmo Howard, grew up in Georgia where he often entered his paintings in local fairs. In the 1950's, he caused a great scandal when he entered a painting of a nude woman, but ultimately took home the blue ribbon.  His first major art show was arranged in Boston in 1961, and later in New York.  “The painting caused a stir because here we are living in the Bible Belt and a nude painting shows up at the fair,” she said. It later turned out that according to Elmo Howard’s son, this was a painting of his mother.  Artistic fame never came to Elmo Howard despite his blue ribbons and gallery shows. As of 2006, Elmo Howard was still living in an assisted living home in Winston-Salem, NC. It is believed that he created 150 or more works of art including this gigantic Armageddon scene that was purchased at Slotin Auction. Any other info on Elmo Howard would be welcome.
