Art Gallant

1938-1980

Art Gallant was born in Dieppe, New Brunswick, Canada. He was a naive sculptor and woodcarver. He used animal and people in his carvings to make social and sometimes political observations. Art Gallant usually told a story with his carvings and he often put it into words on the sculpture. His sculptures were partially painted and always heavily varnished and signed. He worked with cedar and pine wood and occasionally ‘as found’ materials. Art Gallant is widely collected and his works have become rare. - from Lyle Elder Folk Art & Outsider Art

Gallant is included prominently in Folk Art Primitive and Naive Art in Canada
